The United States Postal Service is sponsoring its traditional dog bite prevention week from May 18-24, 2008. Dog bites are one of the nation’s most commonly reported health problems. The public service campaign offers safety tips and highlights the need for increased pet owner responsibility. The campaign’s theme is “Stay Alert - Don’t be Fooled by My Dog Won’t Bite.”
According to the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Humane Society of the United States, small children, the elderly and postal carriers are the most frequent victims of dog bites. In 2007 alone, more than 3,000 mail carriers were bitten by dogs. In total, dog bites account for up to five percent of emergency room visits.
